Sbarro: An All-White Delight

Before rushing over to catch our screening of World War Z in SM Masinag, we grabbed a very late and very quick dinner at my personal fast food favourite: Sbarro. Again??? Well, if you knew how awesome their food is, you wouldn't wonder why. In Sbarro, you just can't go wrong with a deep dish pizza.
sbarro
Stuffed Pizza: Chicago White, P179.00
White sauce on white pizza! While I have always loved this, its quality seemed under par this time. It's' a lot thinner than it used to be. It was also slightly cold and the store was almost closing. Too bad. Nevertheless, I still consider it to be great pizza. Mozzarella, pepperoni, ham, ricotta and a tiny bit of pineapples all melded into the delicious, creamy stuffing. For added zing, you can sprinkle chili flakes or even herbs on it.

sbarro
New York Style Pizza: White, P99.00 (with drink, P89 if solo)
Don't let this humble slice of pizza fool you. It's even better than the deep dish. Big, light, and with a strong cream cheese flavor, this slice of pizza is my favorite of their non-deep dishes and is extremely addictive. An amazing meal for 89 pesos.

What pained us is right after buying, they put up a buy 1 take 1 sign for the pizza. WTF!

Oh well.. Sbarro also now has their great garlic bread for sale.

sbarro

6 pieces of bread for 80 bucks. Not bad at all!

Verdict:
Stuffed Pizza: Chicago White: Great! (usually Excellent!)
New York Style Pizza: White: Excellent!

It was great feat that I convinced Alvie to go for an all-white dinner since she gets tired of cream easily. AND we both enjoyed it! She's finally understanding what makes Sbarro great! She wasn't a fan of Sbarro but I am slowly and steadily bringing her over to the light. Haha! I am unable to accept that anyone wouldn't love their deep dish pizza and baked ziti.

Always a favourite.

Game Review: Binary Domain

Image from here.
The Machine Age has begun.

From Sega and the team that brought us the Yakuza series, Binary Domain is a third-person shooter set in 2080 Tokyo. Mankind has progressed and technology has brought us truly advanced robotics. The problem is, advancement has been so rapid that robots can act like and look like humans. You play as Dan Marshall, a US Army operative who, with his crew, undertakes missions and battles an unknown enemy.

Plot
The story was quite interesting, and the environment was set up nicely. The main character is a bit too much of a Commander Shepard (Mass Effect series) clone though, with slightly more personality. Apart from him and a Chinese officer named Faye Lee, the characters are barely interesting. The events of the first half of the game were actually a lot of fun to experience, but that quality significantly dropped during the latter part of the game. Was development rushed? I played the first half for pure enjoyment, and the second half just to see how the story ends.

Gameplay
The mechanics are very straightforward, pretty much just all-out action throughout the game. With only a very, very simple weaponry upgrade system, there is not much by way of customization so you'll spend barely any time doing anything other than shooting. This is appreciated, but I would have liked to have a bit more development in my skills and weapons. Run, shoot, duck, cover, shoot, shoot, shoot. Occasionally, you'll get to interact with your teammates even while doing all that. Unmute the video below to have a listen. :)

Well, he didn't like my affection. The one thing which makes this game slightly unique is the voice commands. During battle, you can command, curse, or even flirt with your teammates. I enjoyed that diversity. Even through story plot points, people start talking to you and await your reply from your own voice. A lot of fun in playing that way, but sometimes, recognition can get frustratingly inaccurate in comprehending your voice. I've had to try different accents and voice volumes to get some of the phrases in. All in all, still quite entertaining.

Graphics
The game is actually visually smooth, in a Japanese game sort of way. I can't say the same about movement though. Well, I guess it's smooth too, in a way, but it isn't realistic at all. Ironically, movement is very robotic. I may be overjudging because I am reviewing this after The Last of Us, which sets the bar pretty damn high for all games. Graphics are close to Metal Gear Solid 4, but without the great environments. All the areas in this game seem all-too-conveniently boxed in.

Sound
The music and sound effects are pretty average as action games go. The voice acting was also nothing stellar.

Verdict:
3/5 - While only the first half was good, it is not an experience I regret. If you want to just dabble in it, play the first half then stop. Haha!

Órale!: The Best Quesadillas

Órale! has always been a pleasure to have nearby at the Fort Strip. Can't have enough Mexican selections!
For burritos, It's a triple tie between this restaurant, Mexicali, and Taco Bell.
For enchiladas, it's Mexicali.
For quesadillas, this is the place!
orale
Pollo Asado Quesadilla, P285.00
There are just two pieces, but I have never seen Quesadillas that are done this well. They're usually just paper thin tortilla pieces with filling. It is thick and very filling, almost like pizza! While this is stuffed with grilled chicken, there are other versions available, like lengua! Topped with tomatoes, jalapeños, and cream, I have yet to try something that comes close. The totopos (corn chips similar to tortilla) on the side are a bit too dry and tough for me, but fun to snack on anyway. I bet this would have been even better with a side of guacamole.

orale
Chile Verde, P295.00
Tortilla, pork and refried beans. It didn't look like much, but it turned out to be very good! The sauce was bursting with flavor and spice, which was perfect with the extreeemely tender pork. I didn't like that there was a significant amount of fat, but I changed my mind once I had a taste. It's quite possibly the softest fat I have ever had. That made me momentarily forgive myself for indulging in this dish. Tortilla was good and refried beans are always great! Strangely, this is just available on Fridays to Sundays. Awesomely, the Dos Equis beer next to my plate came free with the meal! Sweet, huh? They didn't say until when the promo would last, though.

I enjoyed the beer so much, I made myself a meme for it! Haha! We ended lunch on a sweeter note.

orale
Churros, P65.00
Hrm.. not totally the normal churros look. Is this because it's Mexican? The lower one looks like a wizard's staff! The churros were a bit more dry than the kind I am used to. The cinnamon sugar dip was interesting enough. This was okay, but I guess I prefer the more classic type of churros, and the hot chocolate dip.

Menu:
Traditionals
Weekend Menu
Beer Promo

Verdict:
Pollo Asado Quesadilla: Great!
Chile Verde: Great!
Churros: Good

I'm glad there are more good Mexican restaurants now! Mexicali has always been great and all, but we need some competition! "Orale!" is a Mexican word for "Alright!" and that's exactly the proper reply when faced with the question of eating at this great place.

Uncle Cheffy: A Piece 'a Panizza

To celebrate a special day, we (or was it just Alvie? lol) were invited to grab lunch at Uncle Cheffy with friends. I have never eaten here, so I was looking forward to it!
uncle cheffy
Awesome sign! It's like it's out of a comic.
We were late but arrived just in time *wink wink* because our arrival coincided with that of all the food. Not on purpose, I promise!

uncle cheffy
Memphis Barbeque U.S. Beef Rib Finger, P595.00
(1,000 grams) with salad and marble potatoes and sauces.
Ribs! Boy, do they know how to start off a meal!
This looks good, but what was on the menu looked SO much better (see link below). Menu deceptions aren't very rare, I guess, so that's fine. This dish was also just fine for me. I liked the volume of the meat, but felt that the taste was just okay. The meat was tender enough. If I were to compare, I'd say this is a far cry from Racks' tender ribs or New Orleans' flavorful ribs.

uncle cheffy
Spaghetti Alejandro, P350.00
Spanish inspired pasta with tomato sauce, smoked chorizo, pimientos and edam cheese.
While I love giant pieces of cheese as much as anyone, this did not look very appetizing to me. But hey, I love pasta. I didn't really taste chorizo or much else because this just tasted like tomato sauce. Nothing more. Pasta doesn't seem to be their specialty but I think they need to up the ante on this one.

uncle cheffy
Tiuey Noodles, P295.00
Asian fried noodles with beef, asparagus and cilantro.
I should have said "no uey" to this dish (Just kidding! I didn't order). This was much better (and cheaper) than the spaghetti, but I don't quite understand the charm of this dish. It's Asian but does not taste like it is. It still tasted very much like a pasta dish and I could taste some tomato sauce.here, too. I don't recall that it had asparagus. Hmm, I suggest just avoiding the noodles at Uncle Cheffy's. They aren't horrible, and perhaps this is just personal preference. No one else voiced displeasure over the noodles, but no one was raving about them either.

uncle cheffy
Chicken Maurino
I couldn't find this on the menu so it might only be available as a part of the panizza set (details in menu link below). The chicken was alright and tasted a lot like chicken estofado, which tastes a lot like adobo, which isn't my thing.

uncle cheffy
Panizza (clockwise from top):
East Meets West, P495.00 for 1 whole
Larry's Craving, P495.00 for 1 whole
Uncle Cheffy Favorites, P395.00 for 1 whole
Seafood Lovers, P425.00 for 1 whole
This isn't normally available and is also a part of the set whose menu is below. You get to try 4 for the price one. Not bad, eh? I'm not really going to describe each flavor because apart from some small differences, they all tasted very similar. Honestly, I'm not a fan of thin pizza, and the flavors of these panizzas seemed quite subdued and lacking in life for me. One fun part is how the panizza is eaten. You add lettuce, alfalfa, tomatoes and roll it all up like so:

Fun, yes, and it grants a different experience but the taste came short for us. This, considering the fact that I love all pizza. Focaccia in A. Venue has a better version of this, but just the same, I don't like my pizza thin! :P

Menu:
Uncle Cheffy Specialties
Brick-Oven Panizza
Panizza Sets

Verdict:
Memphis Barbeque U.S. Beef Rib Finger: Okay
Spaghetti Alejandro: Bad
Tiuey Noodles: Okay
Chicken Maurino: Okay
Panizza: Okay

I don't enjoy being overly critical but there you have it! I expected a lot more because it seems to remain a strong restaurant in Burgos Circle after a long while and I heard good things about it. Perhaps we were just really unlucky? or perhaps it's just a matter of preference. Anyways, it was still a fun occasion and the service was quite good.

Thanks, Edrik! :)

Pancake House: Cookie Butter Pancakes Surprise

Surprise! Now, it ain't no surprise that restaurants will capitalize on all the Cookie Butter hype and put it on everything from donuts to pancakes. Let's see what our local HOP has to offer!
pancake house
Cookie Butter Pancakes Surprise, P258.00
Have a taste of deliciously smooth, creamy cookie goodness with our Cookie Butter Designer Pancakes. Indulge on your favorite pancakes paired with scrumptious spreads of Trader Joe's Speculoos Cookie Butter delight. It's a unique and tasty treat perfect to make your day complete.
We have tried the Speculoos stuff and felt it was meh. I think our months-old jar at home has remained mostly untouched since after its first week. We were both curious and skeptical that these would be any good. Curiosity paid off because it was surprisingly good. I thought it might turn out to be too sweet, but I wasn't complaining at all. It was flavorful enough that we barely used the cream and poured maple syrup only for moisture. I did find it to be pricey but I figure it was worth the experience of trying it the first time.

What else would one order at Pancake House? The last thing on my mind would be fish, but Alvie loves this stuff...

pancake house
Smoked Golden Tinapa, P246.00
Milkfish smoked to golden perfection and served with steamed rice and mango salsa.
I tend to avoid fish for breakfast because I somehow end up with fish breath all morning, no matter how much I brush my teeth. Well, at least this fish was worth it. The bangus was good, flavorful and I don't know.. it felt almost creamy. Not bad at all. The mango salsa was interesting, and went really well with the fish. We even asked for seconds! The egg was normal, but I thought the way it looked over the rice was cool. I can't even transfer a sunny side up from the stove to a plate without breaking the yolk. I think this would have done better with garlic rice (so your breath wouldn't just be fishy, it'd be garlicky fishy!).

Selfies are hard.
Menu:
Cookie Butter Pancakes Surprise
"Breakfast Anytime" Corner

Verdict:
Cookie Butter Pancakes Surprise: Very Good (for me, just Good for Alvie)
Smoked Golden Tinapa: Very Good (for Alvie, just Good for me)

It was a nice breakfast. Not really a big Pancake House fan but I enjoyed the new pancakes!

By the way, to everyone who loves their spaghetti, try adding Reno (or any other kind, maybe?) Liver Spread to your sauce and you'll get that secret, rich, special taste! ;) They can't fool me! Credits to my dad for recognizing it!

Game Review: The Last of Us

Image from here.
It can't be for nothing.

In case you haven't heard of this game and all the hype behind its critical acclaim, The Last of Us is a survival horror adventure game developed exclusively for the PlayStation 3 by Naughty Dog, the geniuses behind the Uncharted series.

Uncharted
I'm a solid fan of Uncharted (Platinum Trophies for each game!). I absolutely love cinematic, story-driven games and I deem them to be the very reason that video games can be considered to be a true art. In video games like this, you spend a lot more time with the characters and with the journey than you would in a movie, and much more interaction than you would get from a TV series or a book. You breathe life into the tale, you literally walk in their shoes, and you face what they face. Uncharted is an Indiana Jones-type story revolving around the very cool and charismatic treasure hunter named Nathan Drake. The Last of Us goes much further than that with its own deeper and darker plot.

Plot
I won't get into details to leave everything experienced as it should, but basically, you play the very reliable Joel who protects a young girl named Ellie throughout a post-apocalyptic world where there roam zombie-like people they call Infected. The characters are amazing. From the first few minutes of the movie right to the end, I felt so unbelievably attached to them that I would catch myself thinking about the events in their lives at random points of my own day. It's truly rare that I get to feel this way for fictional characters, even counting movies, TV and books. If you engage yourself in this game, you would share their sighs of relief and waves of sorrow. At times throughout the game, I actually had to hold back tears. Manly tears.

Image from here.
Gameplay
The game is very smooth and fun to play. This isn't like Metal Gear Solid where you'd spend only a fourth of an hour actually playing and the rest, watching. The story unfolds perfectly while you explore the tragically beautiful environment and while interactions ensue. I just played it on Normal and it was quite easy, but had enough of a challenge to keep you engaged. Like a realistic survival story, there is quite a limitation to the supply of ammo, so I was a very stingy shooter. What's great is you can use the environment, bricks, bottles and even your handy dandy fists to help you dispose of the enemy!

Graphics
This game doesn't only play great, but looks great too. The motion capture and facial expressions were rendered brilliantly. For the most part, it felt more like a movie than a game. Naughty Dog was truly able to bring over the best from Uncharted. They totally raised the bar for smooth and realistic fast-paced animation.

Sound

They got an Academy award winner to create the score for this game and it was evident. The soundtrack perfectly accompanied the events with eerie yet emotional melodies. It wasn't overused, either. It was extremely quiet when it needed to be. The sound effects are all very, very realistic.

Verdict: 5/5 - Excellent!
Not a big surprise there, but I'd just like to say that I already knew about all the high ratings this game has been receiving before I started playing. That means I had incredibly high expectations from this game, and they were all met perfectly. Well, it's even more than that. It blew me away. In a way that I didn't and couldn't expect.

This is a story that has to be told. It is likely one of the best in its medium. I highly recommend that you play this game and immerse yourself in it. If you don't have a PS3 and can't borrow one, watch a friend or even watch online. This is a tale I don't think I'll ever forget.

Between blogging, singing, and other things, I haven't really been able to play games recently. How fitting it is that I got to play this game now, because it reminds me that I am totally missing out. I really ought to use my PS3 more! As I have read before, video games really are the best avenue for one to experience many amazing lives rather than just one. This is the first of many game reviews!

Here's the trailer!

Saboten: Enjoyin' Some Loin

So, the new craze in Manila is Tonkatsu, huh? Move over, Ramen! Still quite a Japanese trend. I hope Sushi is next!
saboten
Everyone's going Katsu crazy.
Saboten is a Tonkatsu chain that has its roots in 1966 Japan, so it carries a hefty heritage. Some say the local competition, Yabu, preempted Saboten's arrival, and now it seems we have a war on our hands. I can't wait to try Yabu and see if it's as good.

Though we aren't fans of venturing too far for lunch, Alvie and I couldn't resist when we heard our office friends were making the journey to Serendra to try this place out. Our Tonkatsu tasting is so overdue, we haven't even tried Yabu! (So no comparisons yet, sorry!)

saboten
Neo-traditional.
I'm actually more of a Katsudon (Tonkatsu on rice with egg and a lighter, sweeter sauce) guy me-self, but okay, I'll see what the big deal is. I don't think I have ever had quality Tonkatsu before.

saboten
Cold and hot service tea.
Service tea is immediately available. I naturally opted for the colder kind (I can never understand how people can enjoy hot beverages while eating!). No surprise that the tea is better served hot, but hey, better than water, I guess. Haha.

saboten
Cool set of condiments.
We noticed (and did not immediately understand) the plethora of strange condiments made available to you. There's the ever fancy yet indistinguishable sea salt, a delicious vinegar type sauce, Tonkatsu sauce and a sesame cream sauce that goes great with your unlimited cabbage. Speaking of which...

saboten
Cabbage, Radish, and Pickles.
These are the side dishes that come for free when you order one of Saboten's set meals. They're all unlimited! The cabbage was really good with the sauce. We had seconds and we had thirds! The radish and pickles instill more variety in your meal.

saboten
Grated Radish Katsu (Loin Set), P395.00
Grated Radish with grapefruit turns tonkatsu into a refreshing delight.
Alvie and I were quite full from our Cronut conquest earlier in the day, so we just shared this meal and ordered an extra cup of rice (P100). The soup it came with was good, standard Miso soup. Not bad at all for something unlimited. The Tonkatsu was delicious. As explained by the waitress, you squeeze the grapefruit, then pour the Ponzu sauce on the meat. It turned out quite good!

If I had one regret, it's that we didn't order the leaner Tenderloin version. This meat was nice and thick, but I'm not fond of fat in my Tonkatsu. We were warned that the Loin had fat but I guess I assumed it was the more graceful kind (not thick).

saboten
Meaty and tender.
Nevertheless, it was still very enjoyable. If it came with regular unlimited rice, I'd easily give this set meal a "Good" rating. It didn't. It comes with awesome unlimited Japanese rice. It was so good that even with no meat left, I ate a cup with just radish shavings and Tonkatsu sauce. Sad, I know, but with rice like this, it was still great! I'm not big on plain white rice, so I'm surprised that this is one of the best parts of my meal.

Menu:
Grated Radish Katsu
Katsu Curry, Clay Pot
Dessert

Verdict:
Grated Radish Katsu (Loin Set): Very Good

Even a week after, I'm still thinking about the damn good rice! Oh, and the pleasant variety of good side dishes spice things up nicely too. I look forward to coming back for more unlimited Japanese rice goodness, and trying out more of their many other tempting offerings. Maybe we should try the competition, too!
