Legend of India: Sugar and Spice

We got to try this place using a voucher, so I'm not sure the portions in our pictures is what you get on the normal menu. The food was great, though, so we decided to share what we ate along with their regular menu prices. This place, I heard, is owned by one of my friends from high school I haven't gotten in touch with in a long time. :)
legend of india

This place is located on Jupiter street in Makati. Not my favourite nor the most convenient place, but it was a place I wanted to try so we thought it's worth the trip.

legend of india

They have a snack section where you can take out some Indian snacks and pastries, that I sadly have no notion of. Haha.

A quiet, at the time empty, yet sufficiently lively place and I enjoyed the privacy when we dined here.

They started off our culinary series with a small bowl of chips that are alien to me, but appetizers are appetizers, and it did what appetizers do: keep you company until the real food comes. Haha.

legend of india
Toasted Papadum, P30.00
Aloo Boonda/Potato Balls, P120.00
Diced Potato mixed with Indian herbs and spices, fried in Gram Flour
I ought have gotten ready for all the unfamiliar food names that I would encounter! The papadum tasted kind of like tougher tofu chips and didn't quite appeal to my taste too much, but it was fun to eat anyway. The Aloo Boonda was nice and quite heavy, so I'm glad they only served us one each to start because there was so much more coming!

legend of india
Chicken Masala, P340.00
Fish Curry, P420.00
Boneless chicken mixed with egg, tomato, onions and mild spices
Pieces of fish mixed in blend of tomato and onion sauce and flavoured with mild spices
The Fish Curry wasn't bad. It had almost the usual curry taste done well, and good pieces of fish fillet that filled the bowl.
The Chicken Masala, on the other hand, genuinely blew us away. The chicken fillet was as expected but the sauce was terrifically flavorful and mildly spicy (we only ordered it 'mild' because Alvie can't take the heat). We couldn't stop eating it. I loved it so much that it was the only thing I had a second order of, and I tried it at the spiciest level and it was unsurprisingly even better. Excellent stuff!

legend of india
Dhal Tarka, P250.00
Palak Paneer, P280.00
A very famous Indian dish, yellow lentils cooked with special Indian spices
Blended spinach mixed with home made cottage cheese
The lentil soup was also quite good, and so was the blended spinach with cottage cheese. The paneer dish, also a usual favourite, really did quite well for me and I think is the second best thing I enjoyed from this visit.

legend of india
Plain Naan, P100.00
Tandoori Roti, P80.00
Plain flour bread
Whole wheat bread baked in a clay oven
Of course, what goes best with all these infinitely flavorful, thick sauces for your lunch? Well, aside from good rice, I mean? The addictive unleavened breads in the form of Naan and Roti. I don't quite remember which one I liked more, but they were both really good.

legend of india
Gulab Jammu, P60.00
North Indian Treat: Deep fried milk balls in thick syrup
You can't leave the restaurant with a flaming mouth, and sometimes water just won't cut it. To douse the overwhelming flavor swirling in your mouth, these milk balls in overwhelmingly sweet sauce do just the trick. Haha. It's very custardy and is like tiny leche flan cakes in a super thick sweet sauce.

Menu:

Mutton Lovers, Fish Lovers, Shrimp Lovers

Verdict:
Toasted Papadum: Okay
Aloo Boonda: Good
Chicken Masala: Excellent!
Fish Curry: Good
Dhal Tarka: Good
Palak Paneer: Very Good!
Gulab Jammu: Very Good!

Even if a lot of the menu was alien to me to begin with, we were happy to encounter some amazing new dishes. I really should get around to eating here again sometime when I'm in the area of Jupiter.

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen

Ahh, one of our old after-Yoga meals. Also part of the influx of authentic Ramen stores around the place, Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen is one of the newer, more popular ones. Located in my favourite 'hood, BGC, it was not long before we got to try this joint. Haven't gotten to try Ramen Nagi, though!

ikkoryu fukuoka ramen
Black Garlic Tonkotsu, P380.00
Tonkotsu soup mixed with special roast garlic oil.
As I usually do, I went for the most unique thing on the menu, and black ramen fit the bill. It naturally did not have my favourite element of ramen, spiciness, but the strong garlic flavor and delicious broth still made this one a truly good meal. You are served some pickles and ground sesame on the side to add to taste. It didn't go too perfectly with my order, but I guess it's helpful in spicing up the more boring ramen types. Haha.

ikkoryu fukuoka ramen
Ajitama Tonkotsu, P380.00
Topped with a special half-boiled egg that is fully marinated with a special blended soy sauce base.
A more normal ramen, save for the special egg that tastes so weird and so good. When we were served this, the egg was actually quite sour, and after asking the waitress, we found out it shouldn't have been. They were very nice about it and gave us a replacement for the egg. The non-sour version tasted even better. It was gooood. The rest of the ramen was quite flavorful for normal tonkotsu.

ikkoryu fukuoka ramen

A pricy lunch, indeed, but sometimes, it's worth splurging on some soothing ramen to ease you in to the relaxed state of the weekend. :)

This was quite a while back, wasn't it? Haha.

Menu:
Ramen 1
Ramen 2

Verdict:
Black Garlic Tonkotsu: Good
Ajitama Tonkotsu: Good

Drop by and enjoy the ramen here at SM Aura if you haven't, then step outside and grab some lovely Pinkberry for dessert! They now have a branch in High Street, too.

Shawarma Guys: Ox Brain at the Strip

Yet one step closer to try every restaurant in the Fort, ever! Well, at least among those that aren't horrendously expensive. Haha.
shawarma guys

We had been seeing this store for a long time before we got around to trying it out. Very conveniently located in the Fort Strip, we had to eventually give it a shot, we enjoyed the cuisine after all.

shawarma guys
Lamb Shawarma, P139.00
The Lamb Shawarma was quite sizable so it did not seem to expensive. It did not, however, have the potent lamby taste I was looking for, but the texture was good enough. Not bad with the sauce.

shawarma guys
Beef and Chicken Combo Kebab, P179.00
Hmm.. a pretty straightforward meal, so I can't say much. Basically, it is not as good as Mister Kebab, but it is better than Kebabers' version. Haha. As usual, you'll need to sauce up the dish pretty good to get the most out of it.

shawarma guys
Garlic Ox Brain, P99.00
Braaains. Again, I must compare to Mister Kebab, and this one is a lot more like Salpicao, with larger pieces than I am used to at the other restaurant. I do not prefer this version because it is a lot more real, and I felt the actual brainy texture a bit more. I like ox brain, but I guess I don't love it that much. Haha. Am I making sense?

shawarma guys

A very festive interior, and it wasn't too populated. Man, my hair was short back then. Another clue into how far back my writing backlog is!

Verdict:
Lamb Shawarma: Okay
Beef and Chicken Combo Kebab: Okay
Garlic Ox Brain: Okay

We haven't gone back since, and perhaps we will not, unless we get a real strong kebab craving. I think I like this place more than Kebabers.

100 Miles Cafe: Our Own Private Hangout

100 miles cafe

Now, I'm not claiming to own this fine establishment. It's just that it's such a well-hidden good place that most of the time that we eat here, including Friday nights, it's pretty barren. I'm not complaining, far from it. We have come to enjoy the privacy and quiet that goes with a meal at 100 Miles. Well, as long as they never close due to lack of customers.

100 miles cafe

As you can see, the place is very running-themed, hence the name. It's more than just a theme, because they offer lockers and even their showers for nearby runners who want to use the facilities before or after dining here. I love it here for the same reason I do our recently featured Stacy's: near the office, good food, relatively cheap, too! We've eaten here many times already, and these are what we usually order.

100 miles cafe
Complimentary Bread Sticks
This comes before every meal. A bit too thin for me, but it goes well with the sauce and hey, better than nothing!

100 miles cafe
Fettuccini Carbonara, P180.00
Pasta with the classic and comforting creamy white sauce topped with bacon bits. Served with bread.
Ahh.. my usual creamy pasta choice. The taste is okay, but what I love about this carbonara is the noodles. I usually prefer the wider noodle varieties, and especially if it is cooked al dente as it is in 100 Miles. This is how carbo-loading should be done! (pun not intended)

100 miles cafe
100 Miles Pizza, P215.00
Guaranteed to satisfy that carbo-load craving (with added protein). Chicken, salami, bacon, arugula, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, button mushroom, white onion, black and green olives layered with mozzarella. To top it all off - one sunny side-up egg. A complete meal!
There's just something about sunny side-ups that make it go well on everything in its own sloppy way. Pizzas are definitely the case. This pizza isn't thick-crust like I wish it was, but the ingredients on it were quite good.

100 miles cafe
Seafood Aglio Olio, P195.00
One of our most popular pasta dishes. Pasta with spicy seafood made up of white prawns, squid, and mussels mixed with garlic and olive oil. Served with bread.
This is Alvie's usual order, since she's not much for the creamy pasta. It's very flavorful, al dente, and mildly spicy. A tasty combination! This is one of the best 100 Miles has to offer. Look at that squid and shrimp (skinless!).

100 miles cafe
Seafood Pizza, P215.00
The seafood treat for seafood lovers. Prawns, squid, mussels, white onion, mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
This pizza's about as good as the 100 Miles Pizza. Not my favourite, but still very good. But wait, isn't that true for all kinds of pizza? Haha.

100 miles cafe
Spaghetti Bolognese, P180.00
Everyone's favorite. Ground beef and herbs mixed in the familiar Italian rich red tomato sauce. Served with bread.
Truthfully, I do not remember this very much, apart from the fact that the noodles are good. I guess they use the same noodles for any of the types of pasta we ordered. I prefer the other two kinds much more, as I'm not much of a meat sauce person.

100 miles cafe
Tuna Melt Sandwich, P160.00
The go-to protein meal. Juicy tuna flakes topped with white onion, tomato, cucumber, and cheddar cheese. 21 grams of carbs, dietary fiber at 1 gram and 23 grams of protein. Served with sweet potato chips. Your choice of bread - whole wheat bread or full grain bread.
Purely a healthy choice, not for taste. For the price, I would much sooner choose pasta, but if you need something that would make you a little less guilty and would have more protein, this is for you. As a sandwich, it isn't bad and the sweet potato chips are good on the side too.

100 miles cafe
Barbeque Pork Spareribs, P195.00
Experience the "falling off the bones" moment. Tender pork spare ribs in an unbelievably flavorful sweet BBQ sauce. Served with java rice.
When I saw my brother order this tower of a meal, I asked myself why I never tried their rice meals before. Haha. It ain't no Racks, but it tastes good, it was tender enough, and there was a lot of it, and that's more than good enough for me. The rice was flavorful, too!

100 miles cafe
Caesar Salad, P180.00
Traditional salad of iceberg lettuce, cheddar cheese and cucumber, with bits of anchovies and bacon. Choice of honey mustard, thousand island or caesar dressing.
I feel sad to admit that since I joined a BMI reduction challenge at the start of April, this is pretty much the type of food I've been eating and it's what I'd be inclined to order if I visited here nowadays. Their salads are good, I tried the Mediterranean salad too and it was truly enjoyable. It's just that for the same price, you'd wish you were wolfing down Carbonara or the tower of ribs. Haha.

Menu:

Verdict:
Complimentary Bread Sticks: Okay
Fettuccini Carbonara: Very Good!
100 Miles Pizza: Good
Seafood Aglio Olio: Very Good!
Seafood Pizza: Good
Spaghetti Bolognese: Good
Tuna Melt Sandwich: Good
Barbeque Pork Spareribs: Very Good!
Caesar Salad: Good

The last time we ate there, the place was packed by the time we left (a definite first), so I hope everyone hasn't found out The Fort Strip's best kept secret! Drop by and check the place out, and feast on their good selection of healthy or carbo-loading food!

Stacy's: A Slew of Snacks

stacy's

Though we do not eat there too often, Stacy's is one of our favourite places to eat in the Fort. The place looks great, it's hella near our office, the food is delicious, and it isn't extremely expensive! We've visited a couple more times since our first. Here, we'll share the new dishes we've tried.

Of course, every time we visit the place, the ambience amuses us and takes us to a simpler and dare I say, better time.

stacy's
Cerealovers Mix, P185.00
The all-time go-to breakfast that's packed with fiber and vitamins!
Crunchy banana and nut cereal blended with Honey corn flakes, Fruit Loops and the nutty goodness of Stacy's home-made granola. Served with cold vanilla milk, a cup of fresh fruits and a glass of OJ.
Did I order this because I love cereal or simply because I am mildly compelled to go through the menu one by one and it happened to be the first? Both! This was really fun to eat. I enjoyed the combination of cereal along with the banana, and I savored the granola separately. The OJ wasn't bad too, and it added to the feel of making this a truly complete breakfast.

stacy's
Layered Sausage and Potato Pie, P210.00
Casserole of ground beef and Hungarian Sausage bits crowned with cheesy smashed potatoes and served with herbed rice and good-for-you corn and carrots.
This one was good, but we wish there was more of it. Also, I guess it's just a case of the name sounding better than the actual dish. Probably my fault, the idea I had of layered sausage and potato pie might have been a tad grandiose. Lots of rice, and I always like corn and carrots.

stacy's
Jersey Shore, P195.00
Classic open-faced tuna melt with a New Jersey diner twist!
Creamy chunks of white tuna salad generously layered with tomato slices and gooey Swiss cheese, piled high on freshly baked whole wheat pandesal.
Served with a side of healthy greens drizzled with sweet strawberry vinaigrette.
Another day, and I ordered (surprise, surprise) the second item on the menu. It sounded fun enough, anyway. I thought it might not be enough for me, but I was glad to see three of them pandesals on my plate. The cheese was indeed gooey and delicious. I was not overly impressed, since it looks like something I can make at home (and I can't make a great many things), but it seemed healthy enough and it did taste good so I still enjoyed.

stacy's
Monkey Toasts, P165.00
Fluffy pieces of cinnamon French toasts topped with sweet caramelized bananas, whipped peanut butter and dark chocolate chips. Works best with freshly brewed coffee.
Not healthy all the time, I ordered this piece of decadence which also happens to be the third item on the menu. It was very sweet and very good and I liked every bite. French toast is a personal favourite, and this adventurous, albeit sweeter version was no exception.

Menu:
All Day Breakfast, Hooray!
Everyday Soups & Greens, After Brunch Stacy's Specials

Verdict:
Cerealovers Mix: Very Good!
Layered Sausage and Potato Pie: Good
Jersey Shore: Good
Monkey Toasts: Good

I've eaten here another time too, and it is always a safe choice. I look forward to trying every one of their meals, in perfect menu order. Thanks for being around, Stacy's!

KFC: Breakfast with the Colonel

Once before, I was a morning person. There was a time I even woke up early enough for morning yoga, and this breakfast was during that fun, healthy time where I was so drained of energy that anything seemed healthy. KFC was just across, so its gravitational pull was quite powerful.
kfc
Breakfast Steak Fully Loaded, P110.00 (coffee included)
A bowl of steamy garlic rice, soft scrambled egg and Original Recipe Chicken fillet topped with creamy white sauce and tasty chocolate chip pancake.
There wasn't much of the breakfast steak, as you can see from the picture. It was soft and delicious as expected, but I wish there was more. At the least, the rice was really flavorful so I almost didn't mind. The scrambled eggs were done well and the messy white sauce connected everything together masterfully. The pancake was not bad, even better than the usual fastfood pancake, and the coffee was well, coffee.

kfc
a.m. Twister, P100.00 (coffee included)
with scrambled eggs, cheese and Original Recipe Chicken in a tortilla wrap.
Like all twisters, I liked this one. It tasted a lot like the breakfast steak since it had pretty much the same ingredients. Also like all twisters, it felt a bit too light for me at the time. Haha. Still worth it, though.

Menu:
Breakfast Menu

Verdict:
Breakfast Steak: Good
Chocolate Chip Pancake: Good
a.m. Twister: Good
